Called Black Cap Pudding in some parts of the country as the blackcurrant jam looks like a luscious cap over the top of the pudding when it is turned out, it was originally a thin batter pudding with currants which sank to the bottom - hence black cap - it has evolved into the sponge pudding we know today. 
Easy to make and a great family pudding. It will steam away happily while the main course is being enjoyed.
